(txt-0006) 1850 – 1890s Rare Alpaca Vegetal Dyed Cape



This Is An Extremely Finely Woven Textile
– This fine of a weave is not produced today
– It was collected in Sica Sica, La Paz, Bolivia
– It is Ex-Jeff Appleby collection, author of “Traditional Textiles Of The Andes, Life And Cloth In The Highlands”
– The very finely woven handspun, alpaca piece is all natural dyes
– The designs on this textile are of birds, the sun and potato hooks used in their agriculture
– It is a woman’s cape called an “Awayo” worn over the shoulders for warmth
– As to be expected of such an old textile, there are darker wear spots visible on the red fields and numerous spots with missing stitches
– These have been reinforced by a conservator to deter further damage
